Allspice is harvested from the dried berries of the allspice tree which is part of the myrtle family. Allspice gets it’s name simply from it flavors which resembles a blend of the following spices cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Allspice is used often when baking, it is excellent in sweet breads, cakes and other bakery goods. Allspice also makes a big appearance during the fall months when combined with pumpkin recipes such as pumpkin pie.

Allspice grows profusely in Jamaica where it is often added to the popular dish of the island called “jerk”.  In Britain allspice is often used while pickling and preserving meats and fish.
