Mace and nutmeg come from the same plant. The spice “nutmeg” is the seed from the plant while “mace” is the protective outer shell surrounding the nutmeg seed. It comes to no surprise that both of these spices have a very similar flavor. However mace has a milder flavor which has a hint of cinnamon and often people have a tough time identifying the spice in dishes.

Mace is often used in baking and sweet dishes such as baked breads, cookies and puddings. Mace can also be used to a lesser degree in savory dishes such as soups, hot dishes and sauces. Mace is used thought Europe in meat pies, pates and stuffing.
