There is a huge variety of different diet recipes that were created, designed or compiled to accommodate or complement many different diet plans that were ascribed to relieve or prevent a multitude of health problems. One of the most common reasons for dieting, at least in the abundance of the Western World and particularly in the United States, is to lose weight. Statistics show the grim reality of rapid weight gain among American adults and children alike. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sixty percent of adults in the United Sates are currently either severely overweight or are morbidly obese. CDC further claims that overweight and obesity along with the sedentary lifestyles that Americans have become accustomed to are the direct causes of over three hundred thousand untimely deaths each year in the United States because the overweight and the obese are most apt to develop heart disorders, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes, gallbladder ailments, joint pains, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and certain types of cancers (breast cancer, colon cancer, endometrial cancer, prostate cancer and kidney cancer).

To address the urgent need to curtail and hopefully reverse the very grave health problems due to overweight and obesity, countless weight loss diet plans have been created and along with them diet recipes. Although a reduction of the calories derived from sugars or carbohydrates and fats (particularly the saturated fats) and an increase in dietary fiber is essential for losing weight, a well planned diet recipe can be deceptively tasty. As a matter of fact diet recipes can be a mere matter of simply substituting several ingredients in favored food recipes. For instance, the lower caloric brown sugar can be used in placing of white sugar, high fiber whole wheat flour can replace bleached white flour, natural apple sauce can often be used instead of butter of margarine in baking, whole eggs can be replaced by egg beaters, low fat or non-fat milk can replace whole milk, and so on. In addition, recipes that require frying can in many cases be broiled, barbequed or baked instead. But the best diet recipes, in my opinion, are the ones created by nature itself — fruit, vegetables, grains, beans and seeds.

One of the most important keys to a good diet recipe is a comprehensive listing of its ingredients and a breakdown of their nutritional values, i.e. counts of calories, fat grams, protein, fiber, sodium and carbohydrates as well as the number of servings and the serving sizes which should be reasonably cut down. Such lists are critical for dieters to monitor their intake of food and its various elements, therefore to raise their awareness and control what they consume at each meal and throughout each day.

It is not easy to be on any diet, especially on a weight lose diet. Therefore to make dieting easier, it is very important that diet recipes result in delicious meals and it is equally important for the dieter to vary his or her recipes so as not to get bored and abandon the needed weight lose diet.
