Food and eating seems to be the single most common and readily recognizable universal joy for most people around the world. Whole culture, religious and secular traditions, life styles of the wealthy and the impoverished, the well educated and the illiterate, the cultured and the primitive are all immersed in the joy of eating.
And this basic and widely spread joy for food and eating can be increased tremendously by modifying the food stuff as well as their mode of preparation. Healthy cooking of a large variety of well selected foods will increase not only the enjoyment of eating but also our overall health which will in turn lead to high spirits, mental sharpness and longevity. And that fact should not come as a surprise to any of us. After all, we all know that fueling our cars with the right kind of gas and lubricating them at regular intervals with suitable oils will improve the engines’ well being and performance as well as give them a longer lifespan. In that respect, our bodies are no different our cars and they should by no means be treated with less reverence and care.
Before we go any further I want to stress the importance of consuming as many whole grain products; raw, steamed, broiled and baked vegetables; fresh and dried fruits; beans; legumes; and raw or dry roasted (preferably salt-free) seeds and nuts as is possible because those are the building blocks of a healthy and sensible diet as well as the key ingredients for your healthy meals. Additionally, when choosing dairy and meat products, be sure to select the fat free and the leanest among them but keep those to a bare minimum. Remember that polyunsaturated margarine is healthier than butter; that white meat such as fish or poultry are much better choices than the red meat can ever be; soups and salads are what healthy cooking is about not pizzas, hamburgers, cakes or donuts.
Fats and oils have a tendency to clog up your arteries which is, needless to say, very unhealthy. Convert your deep frying habits into stir frying with little to no oils. If, however, you find frying an essential part of your food preparation, sure to used olive oil or canola oil rather than lard or some other kind of saturated oil and when removing the food you have fried from its pan, place it on paper towels to drain and absorb the excess oil. And always allow the fats to drain out when grilling.
It has been well documented and every health and fitness expert knows that eating five or even six small meals a day is by far more health than eating the standard three large meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) because frequent petite portions help regulate your digestion and metabolism and then keep them working at their peak. In addition, eating frequent small meals teaches your body and your brain to eat in moderation and keeps you from overeating. And overeating does not only put you in the obvious danger of gaining unwanted weight but it also places an undue burden on your entire digestive system which can ultimately lead to all kinds of health issues and disease.
It is very difficult to find a truly healthy meal in restaurants and utterly impossible to find anything healthy, much less an entire healthy meal, in fast food restaurants. My best advice therefore is that you cut your excursions to restaurants way down, eliminate fast food restaurants completely and stay home more often to follow the directions of healthy cooking recipes. You will be saving money and, more importantly, your health and good looks.
