Customer Review: Tries to do too many things - not much of a cenvenience.
As winter settles in and we begin to prepare more soups and sauces, I heard about this Immersion Blender and bought one. It is a hand-held, multi-function device and, like most other kinds of ‘multi-function’ devices, some features are more useful than others. To described and compare this Immersion Blended, I will compare it’s features and abilities with the equipment I have been using - which I thought it might take the place of - an old Osterizer with the standard tall blender top and a chopper/Cuissinart-like attachment to use for chopping, dicing, grating, etc. I also use a manual wire whisk and, as needed, a standard Mixmaster. It was my hope that this simple-appearing device would serve as an easy to use, clean up and maintain replacement for some or all of the above. Well …. in some instances, Yes - and in others, No. “Multi-function’ machines, whether for kitchen use (like this one) , for office use (like an all-in-one printer, fax, scanner and copier) of for entertainment (a combined VHS and DVD player) are mixed blessings. At best, they do some of the things they do remarkable well - and others, at best, only adequately. Such is the case, as I shall now describe, with this device. It is an interesting and attractive piece of equipment - available in a range of colors - mine is black to match other kitchen appliances. It comes packaged with everything it needs and can do - the Motor Base to which everything else attaches, a Mixing Blender for dealing relatively small quantities, a Chopper Bowl and Lid ( much like the chopping attachment to my Osterizer), a Wire Whisk and a Blending Rod - the heavy duty special feature of the ensemble. The promotional material for this blender/chopper emphasizes the ability to simply immerse it into the material you need to process - a pot, for example, when making and pureeing soups after sauteing the ingredients - right there in the pot - thereby eliminating (or reducing) the need to dirty and have to clean up other bowls, pots and containers. This is, in fact, it’s main feature and the one that makes it most desirable. The attachment used for this process is the “Blending Rod.” Problem is, while the instructions are explicit about moving it up and down while using in the pot - there is no caution that if/when it (inevitably) comes in contact with the pot’s bottom - if that pot has protective coating, the device chews up the coating- ruining the pot. Yes, bowls and other containers remain clean and unused, but pots need to be replaced: quite a tradeoff. So for this function, I have gone back to sauteing in a pot and transferring the mix to the Osterizer, blending it there and putting the pureed mixture back into another pot or bowl for final preparation. The whisk attachment is handy and does a good job, but is no more effective than good hand-whisking. The Chopper Bowl/Lid device does the same work as the chopping top attachment to the Osterizer except that it requires that the motor device itself (the bulk of the devices weight) be held in your hand. A possible area of difficulty or at least awkwardness for older users. The Mixing Beaker is useful, in a limited way, for small quantities of sauces and other small projects. All-in-all, this gizmo looks nice (and comes with a wall bracket to hold both the whisk and Blending Rod), but adds no appreciable advantage to the utility of the Osterizer with it’s own attachments. Unlike the Osterizer, it can not be simply left running! You have to stand/sit there and hold it upright while it is running… otherwise, havoc will result in your kitchen!
